Planning for Our Newest Infrastructure
Dennis A. Randolph · 2009
Wireless communications systems are the newest addition to the community infrastructure set. Used for communications and control of such critical services as wastewater treatment system and water system control, and traffic signal system and ITS systems, they have become critical tools for engineers and public works managers. Yet, integrating wireless systems into communities' infrastructure plans has not yet become a standard part of the master planning process. As a result, duplication and inefficiencies in developing these systems is possible. This paper addresses the need for incorporating wireless systems into a community’s master plan, and discusses some of the factors that we need to consider when developing a master plan.
