In August 1984 Michael Green of Queen Mary College, London, and John Schwarz of the California Institute of Technology, wrote a paper which sent a wave of excitement through the theoretical physics community. Indeed, submissions to the main journals in theoretical high-energy physics fell dramatically in the period following publication as many physicists dropped whatever they were working on at the time and frantically learned about the subject of the paper: string theory.
