Mathematics of Musical Scales

THERE are many musical scales. Although it is not apparent to the casual listener, the scale of tones of the piano differs from that of the violin. Middle Eastern music can only be approximated on most Western instruments because their scales are different. These scales and their differences can best be explained through mathematics.
