This paper presents research at BT Labs in intelligent workflow management technologies. We summarise the results of past research, and then describe recent work where we applied range of AI technologies to workflow management systems. In particular, we discuss how we are currently using . Machine learning (specifically support vector machines and time series analysis) . Qualitative multi-criteria decision-making . Ontology management and resolution Finally, we conclude with three challenges for future research into intelligent workflow management systems. 1. Introduction: Perspectives and Motivation Virtual and other forms of extended enterprise have become increasingly common as organisations seek new ways of delivering value to their shareholders and customers.
