Exploiting communication mechanisms in replicated databases

Joanne L. Holliday, Amr El Abbadi, Divyakant Agrawal · 2000

Will replicating a database improve its performance? Are deadlocks the cause of poor performance in replicated databases that use a traditional eager update protocol? How can we manage database replicas that are connected only by an unreliable wide area network such as the Internet? How can replica management schemes be made more flexible so that they can be used with ad-hoc network and mobile databases without treating the frequent disconnections as catastrophic failures? The problem of replica management has been considered by many researchers. In this dissertation, the replica management scheme is chosen to take advantage of the characteristics of the network that is used to connect the replicas. The resulting systems are studied with the help of a computer simulation in an attempt to answer some of these questions.
