The rapidly increasing demand for land mobile radio communications leads to the necessity of a system that has high spectrum efficiency and good bit error rate (BER) performance on Rayleigh fading channels. To achieve good BER on the channels, increasing diversity of a system is important. Bit interleavers are effective for increasing diversity of a coded system, but it is not clear that what code is appropriate for a system with bit interleavers. In this paper, we discuss appropriate criteria for designing codes on a system with bit interleavers so as to maximize diversity of a system. According to the discussion, we search for a good code on a system with bit interleavers. We propose a system with bit interleavers in conjunction with the code we obtained, and then investigate the BER performance of the system on Rayleigh fading channels.
