Theft by Employees

Joshua A. N. Bamfield · Palgrave Macmillan UK eBooks · 2012

Retail employees are able to commit a wide range of thefts against businesses and against their customers. Employees, by the nature of their work, handle merchandise and money, have access to the operations of the business and its computer systems and regularly deal with sensitive details about customers, their accounts, payment card and their banking information. This chapter examines the scale of theft and fraud by employees and discusses the main reasons why some employees breach the loyalty they should owe to their employers. A large database of employee offenders (2,859 employee thieves) drawn from four large UK retailers has been used to analyse the relative importance of different types of staff crime and examine key dimensions of the offending population. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
