What is the difference between Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS)?

The obvious answer is that the latter is distributed! However on closer inspection the two threats are poles apart in terms of the potential disruption they pose to the legitimate activity of executing business on the Internet.
