MOST PEOPLE believe that short sentences are easier to read than long sentences. There is one important exception, however, and it may account for many of those baffling situations in which students reading at a certain grade level are unable to understand materials with a matching readability level. Several researchers in the last few years have noted that when sentences are made short in order to control the
