Cross-Cultural Assessment of Personality: The Case for Replicatory Factor Analysis
James N. Butcher, Charles D. Spielberger · 2013
The use of factor analysis in cross-cultural studies of personality is gradually becoming common practice. In this chapter I survey the use of this methodology and explore its strengths and pitfalls. The already voluminous literature in this area, to be cited later, indicates the importance authors and researchers attach to studying their personality measuring instruments in this manner, and suggests the timeliness of a review. This review will not be exhaustive, but selective, focus ing on five representative personality questionnaires: the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), the 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire (16 PF), the Comrey Personality Scales (CPS), the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality In ventory (MMPI), and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI).
