After adding a new drive to a server or even a workstation, if you’re like me there’s always a few minutes of familiar trepidation as you remind yourself of how the fdisk utility works. If you mess up, you can render your server’s main drive unusable or put your desktop’s backup drive into an irreparable state. There are ways of recovering deleted partitions, but frankly I’ve got other things to be getting on with. Even when your heart rate is back to normal, having mastered the required partitioning task, you’re not over the finish line yet because you still have to figure out the best filesystem for the job at hand.
