Effect of Distinctive Feature Pretraining in Phoneme Discrimination Learning

Harris Winitz, Linda Preisler · Journal of Speech and Hearing Research · 1967

Distinctive stimuli pretraining procedures were used to teach difficult sound discrimination contrasts to first and second grade children. The subjects first learned an easy discrimination and then a difficult one; all tasks were administered by automatic programming devices. Findings indicate that pretraining procedures can be used to increase effectively the learning of difficult discriminations. Other variables considered were the verbal unit in which the sound was placed and the sequence of phonemes employed in the pretraining program.
