Abstract ‘To limit one’s interest to an appreciation of the mechanical ingenuity by which the results are produced is fatal.’ From the chapter on Office Machines and Appliances, and Labour-Saving Devices contained in Business Building, editor F.F. Shades, published in 1923. The BCS has just revised its examination syllabus [1,2]. It has provided in many ways an excellent and leading-edge syllabus. Yet, is this enough? Many would say no. The current syllabus is too oriented towards technical computing. It does not do enough for the manager, the business analyst, or the systems analyst.
