IoT Applications -- Healthcare and Security Case Study (Fast Abstract)

Robert Abatecola · 2015

The application of IoT technology in the healthcare industry has been anticipated since before the growing web of interconnected devices that make up the Internet of Things had a name of its own. The expectation is that these applications will provide many benefits, among them improvements in healthcare delivery and healthcare system reliability as well as reduction in the expense and labor required to fulfill patient needs. This paper describes an experimental implementation of a system that utilizes IoT for healthcare and related purposes. As technology becomes ever more intertwined with health-care, security is an important concern, particularly in network-connected systems that can have a direct influence on an individual's health and well-being. This concern becomes paramount when people's lives are dependent on such systems, as may be the case in critical care, military, and other applications. With this in mind, a brief discussion of security considerations is also presented.
