A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Nordic Surnames

Analysing Nordic persons ’ names with re-spect to language identification is a very hard task, as the chosen group of lan-guages is closely related, but provides interesting insights into the structure of names; it is also a task that has many applications in information extraction, speech synthesis, and automatic translit-eration. In this paper we present and discuss results obtained by statistical lan-guage modelling as well as by a hand-crafted definite clause grammar. 1
