Radio frequency transmit power amplifiers (Tx AMPs) in a base station (BS) need to be used efficiently to achieve green mobile cellular systems. Conventionally, separate type power amplifiers (SP-TxAMPs) are used in a BS with multi-directional antennas covering the three or six sector areas, where each SP-TxAMP is connected to each sector antenna. The total output power of SP-TxAMPs, is not utilized because of traffic load fluctuations among sectors. We propose a BS using a multi-port type power amplifier (MP-TxAMP) instead of SP-TxAMPs and clarify that the BS with MP-TxAMP is superior to the one with SP-TxAMP for reducing the BS power consumption.
