UNDERSTANDING THE CHINESE LANGUAGE

The machine understanding of Chinese is a hard topic for AI researchers. This paper discusses the peculiarities of Chinese, the goals and open problems in the area, and introduces some research results so far achieved. The paper consists of three parts: introduction to Chinese and Chinese characters; some research results in Chinese computer processing and understanding; the goals and open problems of Chinese understanding.
