Interpolative initiation: analysis and design of an efficient algorithm for the scientific visualization of volumetric data

Dennis J. Bouvier · 1994

Visualization is the process of creating images that support the understanding of complex data. Visualization takes advantage of the mind's capability to perceive patterns in data presented as images much faster than in a textual format. The research begins by making a very comprehensive survey of volume visualization techniques. From the survey, certain needs for in basic research and specific research are noted. As a result, a new taxonomic classification is proposed and standard nomenclature is defined for the area. Interpolative Initiation, a new, efficient algorithm for volume rendering is designed. An analysis is presented, and the algorithm is empirically tested. The experiments show Interpolative Initiation to be superior in performance to other algorithms in its class. Architectural issues are explored and suggestions for features in a basic architecture for volume rendering is presented.
