Using 3D printers in a computer graphics survey course

Bryson R. Payne · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2015

Consumer 3D printing technology has advanced significantly over the past decade, with dozens of entry-level 3D printers now priced between $500 and $2500, and a few models available for less than $500. This paper presents a curicular approach to using modern 3D printers in an upper-level computer graphics survey course, along with considerations for selecting and maintaining 3D printers for classroom use, and descriptions of all assignments and projects from the Fall 2014 offering of the course. The result of adding 3D printing to a curriculum that already included interactive 3D programming, modeling, animation, and game development was a timely, engaging, and impactful course for all involved.
