During the short space of the three decades since World War II, encounters with computers have become commonplace. The intellectual applications of computation, which were once restricted to complex mathematical calculations, now appear in such diverse domains as history, geology, and music. The machines were initially located only in a few, isolated research laboratories; today a housewife can have a computer in her kitchen.
