Received Signal Strength (RSS) is an important indicator in wireless communications. RSS is very useful in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) localization. However, RSS is subject to environmental impact, which usually lead to big errors in practical application. The relationship between RSS and distance is usually described by Log-shadow model, but the model cannot give good description of indoor RSS properties because of complex indoor environments. In this paper, we analyzed different influencing factors on RSS in indoor environments. The factors included node difference, radio signal frequency, transmission power, antenna orientation, height, distance to wall, etc. Then, we analyzed RSS Characteristics indoors. This analysis is meaningful for indoor wireless sensor network design and indoor localization.
