Scheduling for a Modular Activity Recognition System to Reduce Energy Consumption on SmartPhones

Martin Berchtold, Henning Günther, Matthias Budde, Michael Beigl · 2011

During the last years, mobile phones more and more have come into the focus of interest of activity recognition research. The research community is faced with two system problems: First, how to separate and schedule activity recognition functionality, and second, how to minimize power consumption. In this paper we (a) propose the use of a modular concept with activity driven scheduling between modules to allow a fine grained and thus effective scheduling of activity recognition functionality and (b) present a sleep time scheduling mechanism that inserts sleeping phases to reduce power consumption. The paper presents the implementation and evaluation of the system on a mobile phone. 1
