7 BENCHMARKING THE ROUND-TRIP LATENCY OF VARIOUS JAVA-BASED MIDDLEWARE PLATFORMS

Abstract. Nowadays distributed Java-based applications can be built on top of a plethora of middleware technologies, such as Object Request Brokers (ORB) e.g. CORBA and Java RMI, Web Services, and componentoriented platforms e.g. EJB or CCM. The choice of an appropriate technology that satisfies the application requirements is driven by various criteria, such as the economic costs, the available features, the performance, etc. The main contribution of this paper is an experience report on the design and the implementation of a simple benchmark to evaluate the round-trip latency of various Java-based middleware platforms.
