Report on three community-originated radio programmes
Sumanta Banerjee · Media Asia · 1978
What happens when a broadcaster moves into a village to record radio programmes that incorporate vignettes of village life with serious comments on rural problems, by the villagers themselves? Sumante Banerjee provides a case study of three community-oriented radio programmes in rural India. The study brings up extremely interesting pointers one of which is that rural listeners do have a great ability to absorb intended messages and that they have a high level of socio-economic awareness of the villagers. His report also shows the validity of community-oriented (not simply community-targeted) programmes especially when you can bring back to the studio tapes of candid feedback from the villagers.
