Towards an Africanised Expression of ICT (Keynote Speech)

Gertjan van Stam · 2012

This is the text of the keynote address at the Africomm Con- ference, 12 October 2012, in Yaounde, Cameroon. The keynote postulates that 'ICT challenges in rural Africa and the impact of social aspects are much constrained by a science unaligned with the realities of sub Sahara Africa'. This address explains the mismatch and misalignment of social aspects and priorities and scientific practice in sub-Sahara academia, with specific contributions towards an Africanised expression of ICT. It expands its effects and affects, proposes an overview of antonyms be- tween Western and African science, and provides some directions that can result in adaptation and alignment of ICT to the African reality.
