Due to the development of mobile devices and broadband wireless network s, interests and demands for multimedia streaming services have been increasing. However, broadband wireless networks have problems which do not guarantee a user perceived quality for multimedia service, because they did not consider the essential characteristics of scalable video coding schemes and network states. In this paper, we propose a new data transmission control scheme, called HDC-ARQ (Hybrid Delay and Content-aware ARQ), which is based on media characteristics and wireless channel states. The HDC-ARQ scheme adaptively adjusts the number of ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) retransmission based on the priority of media frames, and it differentially drops media frames according to wireless network states and delay bound of video playback. Also, it differentially applies FEC (Forward Error Correction) scheme according to media frame complexity in application level. Simulation results demonstrate the improvement for streaming service quality of our proposed scheme.
