Synthesis Principles for High Performance Software

U C Smith · 1985

Six general principles are presented for the synthesis of large-scale software systems with high performance objectives. They are applicable in early life cycle stages for formulating the requirements and the design specifications for the software. Performance is optimized early, at a high level of abstraction rather than late, to tune code after implementation. Each of the principles and the rationale for the selection of the six is presented. Examples of their applicability are provided. The effect of these principles on the responsiveness, the maintainability, and the use of software is discussed.
