Transmission Methods for Asian Languages

Martin E. Allard · Media Asia · 1992

This paper explores the fundamental communications needs for any written language in the broad terms of information theory. It explores the potential of current data reduction techniques to automatically optimize transmission coding. The task of determining how satisfactory a particular system is to the end user is a subjective and culturally loaded judgment. But given a set of design constraints much of the work of the implementor can in theory be rigorously automated. The philosophical and practical limitations to this approach are discussed.
