Driving Assistance Systems Using Wide Angle Lens Camera

Driving assistance system utilizing wide-angle lens camera is proposed. The inherent structure of wide-angle lens inevitably generates geometrically distorted images. An image processing based distortion compensation technique working in real time is applied to obtain more naturally looking post processed images. At the data collecting stage, compensation data are measured for small number of grid points. Compensation data for all other image points between the grid points are calculated using 2 dimensional interpolation methods. These compensation data are stored in a look up table and called out to compensate real distorted images. Actual compensation does not require any computation except single table look up and thus can easily be implemented on a system with moderated computing power. We also implemented a simple lane detection scheme using Hough transform. This scheme can also be used to judge the correctness of image distortion compensation method.
