PROBLEMS IN THE USE OF ETHNOARCHAEOLOGICAL MODELS
A Hawaiian, Ross H. Cordy · 2016
T7 THNOGRAPHIC analogy has been widely used in archaeology to interpret Cj recovered data. Such analogy is actually a deductive test (evaluation) of an ethnoarchaeological model. The model or hypothesis consists of recorded behaviour and its material culture implications. If similar material culture implications are identified archaeologically, deductive reasoning leads to the conclusion that the behaviour was similar. The strength of such deductive conclusions can vary greatly, depending on (1) the number of confirmed implications, (2) the independence of the confirmed implications (the strength is greater with greater independence), and (3) the probability that all possible implications have been deduced and found to match (cf< LeBlanc, 1973).
