The Process of Entrainment and its Application to Computer Music

Musical entrainment processes of a traditional Irish quartet were investigated and quantified through the analysis of multi-track audio recordings and sensor data taken from specially designed sensor embedded insoles (SEIs) which each of the musicians wore. Results show that it was possible to quantify the nature of significant entrainment processes both between (interpersonal relationships) and within (intrapersonal relationships) individuals. These processes were found to occur over differing structural timing levels, i.e. at the beat and phrase level, and by varying degrees of strength. Some evidence for more complex interactions was also found.Given the results of the current study, we believe that quantitative analysis of musical entrainment may be a valuable means of contributing towards strategies of quantization / groove in computer music.
