Efficient Methods for the Display of highly detailed Models in Computer Graphics
Jens Schneider · 2009
This dissertation examines a class of visualization methods collectively referred to as level-of-detail algorithms. These methods are capable of performing interactive visualizations of large, highly detailed data sets by performing a hierarchical pre-process. At the core of this work are the effective utilization of available bandwidths and the hiding of latencies of external storage devices. We show for several exemplary data sets -- such as gigantic point clouds, high-resolution digital elevation data, and gigapixel images -- that interactive frame rates are achieved by exploiting state-of-the-art commodity graphics hardware. This interactivity is the key to editing with immediate visual feedback in the style of the WYSIWIG-paradigm and allows us to design rapid prototyping environments.
