Biometrics: great for physical security, possibly a big mistake for cyber security?

Many people say that the password is dead or should be killed off. But passwords can only be eradicated when there is an alternative – so what technology can replace them? Some people believe that multi-factor authentications or ID federations will do it. It is not easy, however, to conceive of how the password can be displaced by multi-factor schemes where one of the factors is a password; or by ID federations that require a reliable password as the master password.
