A hypermedia expert database system for emergency medical assistance
Hong-Sang Yoon, Jen‐Gwo Chen · 1992
The objective of this research is to develop a hypermedia expert database system to assist the crew medical officer (CMO) in diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias on Space Station Freedom. This serves as a supplemental tool for training the CMO to be familiar with protocols in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) management. The system consists of five major components: (1) an expert system module, (2) a database management system module, (3) a hypermedia system module, (4) a predetermined time system module, and (5) a performance measurement function module. The expert system is integrated with the database management system via a database bridge function and the hypermedia system. The predetermined time system module is developed to establish the standard times for the ACLS protocols on the basis of a predetermined time set obtained from a simulated microgravity environment. The performance measurement module measures the CMO's medical service performance. A synthetic rating method is adopted to determine the time performance. Fuzzy set theory and possibility theory are applied to establish the quality standard and to determine the quality performance. The overall medical service performance is derived by utilizing the time and the quality performances. More than 100 cardiac arrhythmia scenarios were tested for verifying and validating the system with satisfactory results. The results substantiate the practicality of using this system as a performance aid tool as well as a training aid tool.
