Carrier Ethernet extends the original set of Ethernet local area networking technology for supporting enhanced services for data center networks. Since congestion management is an important feature for data center networks to manage the increased demand on data traffic, the IEEE 802.1Qau work group has developed the Quantized Congestion Notification (QCN) scheme. This scheme aims to manage congestion and is implemented at Layer 2 for the Carrier Ethernet. The QCN scheme uses a backward congestion notification to avoid long delays and minimize loss in a Carrier Ethernet network. In this paper, we present the results of detailed simulations achieved to assess the QCN scheme performance. Both a single congested link and a more complex configuration are analyzed in this study. This paper evaluates the feedback rate, the loss rate, the stability, the fairness, and the scalability performance of the standard QCN for a unicast traffic transmission.
