This dissertation presents novel methods for routing optimization and capacity assignment in multi-service IP networks. Both are key processes of traffic engineering and network planning. The proposed routing optimization approach is based on shortest-path routing protocols, which consider additive as well as concave link metrics. Furthermore, a hybrid routing optimization methodology is presented. It relies on the setup of explicit paths for selected traffic demands and, thus, provides additional optimization potential. For the dimensioning of IP networks, appropriate capacity assignment methodologies are developed, which take into account important characteristics and requirements of data (elastic) and real-time (stream) services. The dimensioning strategy for elastic traffic is based on the processor sharing model, which is extended in order to incorporate TCP-specific properties. To consider networks with real-time critical traffic, evolving QoS architectures are analyzed and corresponding optimization procedures are derived.
