Portable open-source source software tools

Many environments today offer walk-up computers for temporary use, for example a casual computing lab available to all students at a school. A growing topic of interest is the use of portable software which does not need to be installed on a computer but instead is provided on removable media. Using a program on more than one computer can impact licensing issues for commercial packages; open-source and freely available packages avoid these problems.
