Overview of NTCIR-9 1CLICK.

This is an overview of the NTCIR-9One Click Access (1CLICK) “pilot ” task. In contrast to traditional Web search which requires the user to scan a ranked list of URLs, visit individual URLs and gather pieces of information he needs, 1CLICK aims to satisfy the user with a single textual output, immediately after the user clicks on the SEARCH button. Systems are expected to present impor-tant pieces of information first and to minimise the amount of text the user has to read. As our first trial, we designed a Japanese 1CLICK task with a nugget-based test collection. Three research teams participated in the task, using diverse approaches (informa-tion extraction, passage retrieval and summarisation). Our results suggest that the 1CLICK evaluation framework is a useful comple-ment to traditional 10-blue-link evaluation. We therefore hope to expand the language scope in the next round, at NTCIR-10.
