Building an Internet Commerce Capability: A Case Study

While it is no doubt true that the Internet will eventually become a vast disintermediated workplace for the delivery of many products and services, the era of so-called “Web- or Internet-based commerce” is not yet upon us. The underlying information technology infrastructure is immature and too fragile. Over the next few years, enabling technologies will emerge to address these shortcomings and even now, there is much that businesses should do to position themselves for the anticipated competitive environment of the World Wide Web. This article describes what one organization is doing now to use the Internet to lower its administrative costs and improve its customer support.
