Analysis of optimum frame length in IEEE 802.11 DCF under error-prone channel and the channel adaptive strategy

Zhuang Zhao-wen · Journal of Communications · 2006

The saturation throughput of 802.11 DCF(distributed coordination function) under error-prone channel and the impact of frame length on 802.11 DCF performances are investigated in this paper. The study shows that there exists an optimum frame length to maximize the throughput under a certain BER,and the optimum length is independent of the number of the sending nodes. At last, based on the range of BER,a simple channel adaptive strategy is proposed to con-trol the frame length.Simulations show compared with fixed frame length transmission, the throughput can be improved effectively by the proposed strategy under error-prone channel.
