Study on Method of Preceding Vehicles Detection and Distance Measurement Based on Monocular Vision

Lei Meilin · Video Engineering · 2011

To meet the requirement of vehicle safety,a method is presented which can be used to detect the preceding vehicles and get the distance between own car and the car ahead.Firstly,an adaptive threshold method is used to get shadow feature, and a shadow area merge approach is used to resolve the distortion of the shadows border. Then, symmetry feature is analyzed to verify whether there exist vehicles in the interesting areas and to locate the vehicles. Finally, using monocular vision distance measurement based on the camera interior parameters and the geometrical reasoning, the distance between own car and the preceding car is got.Experiments are performed practically and the results show that the proposed method can detect preceding vehicles effectively and get the distance accurately in safe distance between vehicles.
