Pyramid Lattice Vector Quantization Based Multiple Description Image Coding Algorithm

Multiple description coding (MDC) is a new approach to alleviate the problem of packet loss in image communication over erasure channels, such as Internet and wireless networks. By decomposing image to several descriptions and sending them over different channels, MDC improves the reconstructed quality under the condition of portions of the data packets lost. Accordingly, a new image coding algorithm, called multiple description pyramid lattice vector quantization (MDPLVQ), is proposed. Based on the independence of wavelet tree of image, two alterable quantizers are used to control the redundancy. Experimental results show that the proposed MDPLVQ outperforms other algorithms such as multiple description scalar quantization (MDSQ), multiple description pairwise correlating transforms (MDPCT) and multiple description EZW (MDEZW).
