On the Study of Basis Selection Algorithm in Wavelet Packet Transform and Its Application in Data Compression

Wavelet packet transform was first proposed by Coifman and. Wicherhauser. Wavelet packet transform has a wide range of applications in various areas as a general case of wavelet transform. This paper discusses the basis selection algorithms and their applications in data compression. The paper proposes a novel near-optimal basis selection algorithm with non-additive information cost functions. It compares with other basis selection algorithms and shows that the new algorithm will give a better result in data compression. The experimental results prove the new algorithm has great value in practical applications.
