A Passive RTT Estimate Algorithm for TCP

A passive round trip time (RTT) estimate algorithm called PRE (passive RTT estimate) is proposed for the traffic monitor devices to estimate RTT of TCP connections in the broadband network. PRE algorithm can find out sending rounds of the monitored TCP flow according to the estimator of package arriving interval (PAI) and estimates RTT by measuring the length of the sending round, which approximately equals to RTT. Base on PRE, passive TCP measurement can be deployed in the traffic monitors. Both simulation and practical experiments validate that the algorithm can estimate RTT properly.
