Who is More Flexible:Introverts or Extroverts

Pan Feng · Journal of Hebei University · 2012

By using task switching paradigm, taking a numerical Stroop task as the experimental material, this paper studied 48 college students(24 introverts and 24 extroverts). Results of reaction time indicated that introverts' switch cost was significantly larger than extroverts'.And introverts' effects of compatibility in switch cost were significantly larger than extroverts under conditions of 200 ms reaction-cue interval and 200 ms cue-target interval. But results of error rate indicated that introverts' effects of compatibility in switch cost were significantly smaller than extroverts' under conditions of 2000 ms reaction-cue interval and 2000 ms cue-target interval. Results suggest that introverts' speed of task set selection was slower than extroverts'.When there were little time to prepare, extroverts could inhibit an irrelevant task and make a more rapid response than introverts. But when there were enough time to prepare, introverts could inhibit an irrelevant task and make a more accurate response than extroverts.
