With the rapid development of networked applications, the traditional network has confronted various kinds of challenges, making it difficult to meet with the QoS(Quality of Service)requirements of new applications.Meanwhile, network management is becoming more and more complex. All these ask the network with the cognitive capability. In this paper,a QoS routing protocol is proposed for cognitive networks. In order to satisfy the various QoS requirements of different applications, the routing requests are divided into different service types and quality levels, and mapped to the corresponding QoS parameters.Routing nodes are given certain cognitive behaviors, such as sensation, active sense, remembrance, search, decision, execution, reasoning and explanation, etc. The corresponding protocol messages are designed to support interactions between nodes, providing nodes with cognition abilities. Each routing node only gathers and maintains local status information from its neighboring nodes and connected links, and routing efficiency is further improved by using and maintaining the empirical path information. The proposed routing protocol has been implemented in prototype systems, and several performance metrics have been evaluated. The experimental results have shown that it is feasible and effective.
