Directional spatial prediction for intra coding is a feature which differ H.264 with the other standards. After analyzing the theory of the intra prediction and the process of the intra coding mode decision,a novel intra mode decision algorithm was provided. This algorithm improved the encoder speed through three strategies, the strategy of prediction of the intra-mode beforehand, the early termination strategy, and the strategy of correlation of neighbor macroblocks.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce encoding time 51.01%~72.91% compared with full search algorithm and 15.63%~27.31% compared with FIMDA algorithm with similar image quality.
