Xuming Fang · Journal of the China Railway Society · 2007
Wireless mesh network(WMN) is a new kind of networking technology supporting capabilities such as multi-hop mesh packet routing and forwarding.WMN solves the dilemma between radio ranges and data throughput in terms of limited transmitting power. For its special structure,WMN demonstrates some unique features and advantages over traditional mobile Ad hoc networks and wireless local area networks(WLAN),such as the higher reliability, higher data throughput, lower interference to others, and stronger scalability etc.WMN has the important practical values for system and network design in military communication networks, public safety mobile data networks, and intelligent transportation systems(ITS) etc.Firstly, the concept and architecture model of WMN are introduced. Then the features and advantages are presented, and the key technologies and issues are discussed. In addition,a new practical application pattern supporting broadband wireless coverages in rail transmit systems is shown, and other typical application paradigms are also given. Finally the standardizing progresses for development of WMN are introduced and the prospects and challenges are put forward.
