Quasi-Modularity of Language Processing: Compatibility of Parallel Processing and Serial Processing

Chen Ji · Journal of Sichuan International Studies University · 2005

The disputation between parallel processing and serial processing is virtually the one between modularity and connectionism. As to the language processing, either theory has strength as well as weakness in its interpretability. The author in this thesis attempts to compare the interpretability of the two, contending that there should exist quasi-modules in which serial processing (modular system) runs the prime operation while parallel processing (neural network informationally encapsulated) correspondingly plays a primitive role, to achieve a presumably genuine paradigm of language processing.
