In many applications of array signal processing, the number of signal sources has to be determined firstly. This paper proposes a new method of determining the number of signal sources by means of Hough transform.Mapping ordered eigenvalue points of sample covariance matrix of the observation data onto Hough parametric space, the number of eigenvalues of noises can be estimated by detecting the peak points on Hough parametric space, and thus the number of signal source is determined.Simulation result validates that the new method has a better performance compared with well-known AIC and MDL criteria.Futhermore, the new method can gain a relatively high detection performance even at low SNR,which provides a potential approach to detect low observable target.
